Memorable Scenes :

Scene One - The Main Street

Scene #2 - The Saloon

  • Vin finds Chris at a table.
Vin : I was thinkin' about gettin' an early start for Tascosa.
    Chris : I was thinkin' about whiskey - a room - a bed - more whiskey.

Chris : What are the women like in Tascosa?
Vin : Don't come much livelier.
Chris : See you in the morning.

  • JD and Ezra are standing at the bar when the judge enters, looking for someone to be sheriff. JD volunteers and when there are no other takers, the Judge gives him the job. The judge recognizes Ezra as someone who jumped bail in Fort Laramie and orders JD to arrest him.

Scene #3 - The Jail

  • In the jail, after Ezra has been locked up, the judge leaves.
Ezra : Well, sir, now that we are rid of that loathsome curmudgeon, you may affect my emancipation.
    JD : Huh?
    Ezra : Let me out.
  • Ezra and Lucas talk in jail.
Ezra : Can I interest you in a game of chance?
Lucas : What are your stakes?
Ezra : Well, let's just say, if I win and your associates succeed in releasing you, you might just forget to lock the door behind you.
Lucas : And if I win?
Ezra : You can kill me.

Scene #4 - Outside the Jail

  • The townspeople confront JD outside the jail. They want him to turn Lucas loose but JD says no, the judge will decide. The people say they will free Lucas if he doesn't.
JD : Try it, you'll be wearin' a coffin tomorrow.
  • Vin fires his gun and scatters the people.
Mr Conklin : We don't want your kind in this town. You bring nothin' but trouble.
Vin : Can't be worse that what you already got.

Scene #5 - Nathan's Room

  • While trying to start Lucas's trial, the judge has been shot by one of Lucas's boys, who show up to free him. Chris and Vin manage to kill two of the men, but Lucas gets away. In Nathan's room, the judge is alive but not conscious. Chris arrives to check on him and say goodbye, and Mary is there.
Chris : Take my advice. Go back to where you came from. This town ain't fit for a woman.
Mary : Listen, Mr. Larabee. When my husband was killed, I swore on his grave I would not become a victim, and that his dreams, everything that we worked so hard for, would not be taken away from us. It's all I have left to give to my son and I'll fight anyone to make sure that happens.
Chris : Alright, as long as you know what you're gettin' yourself into. A man like James, he don't care about nothin' or nobody but himself. You get in his way, he'll walk right through you. Your little boy already lost his father. I'd hate to see him lose his mama too.

Scene #6 - Outside Town

  • Chris, Vin, Mary and Josiah cook up a scheme to make it look like the judge is dead, and even hold a "funeral" to convince James's men. JD, Vin and Chris lower a coffin full of rocks into the grave and JD suggests they say a few words, to make it look more convincing for James's men, who are watching from a nearby hillside.
  • The judge has been moved to Chris's room for safety. He wakes up and sees Chris standing in the window.
Judge : Anybody else get hurt?
Chris : Nobody you care about.
  • The Judge and Chris talk.
Judge : What do you believe in, Mr. Larabee?
Chris : Not as much as I used to.
Judge : From what I can see, more than most.
Chris : I have to choose my fights carefully these days.

Scene #7 - The Street near the Church

  • Nathan and Josiah are working on the church roof and Chris stops by to tell them that he isn't leaving town after all, and that another situation has arisen.
Nathan : This ain't another one of those 6-1 odds kinda things, is it?
    Chris : No, I don't think so. I'm figurin' more like 10-1.
Josiah : You sure know how to lead a man into temptation, don't ya?
Chris : Can we leave now?
Josiah : Whatta ya say, doc?
Nathan : Well, I always did recommend a little fresh air and exercise.

Scene #8 - The James Ranch

  • Chris tells JD to cut the cinches on the horses of James's men while the others go into the camp. There is a boxing match going on and many people milling around, drinking, watching the match and socializing. Chris asks Vin if he can get on the roof overlooking the grounds and take care of the sentry up there.
Vin : Like lickin' butter off a knife.
  • The Seven manage to get Lucas back to town. The townspeople are angry until they realize the judge is not dead. The judge is finally able to get volunteers for a jury to try Lucas. The judge asks the Seven if they will stay and protect the town for 30 days, until he can return. He promises them $1.00/day plus room and board.
JD : I'm in if everyone else is.
Ezra : It's a pity that I, as a convicted felon, will be unable to lend my services.
Judge : How about if you get a pardon?
Ezra : Where to I sign?
Josiah : A man could stay pretty busy in a town like this.
Nathan : I figure if you men are gonna be gettin' shot, I might as well stick around.
Buck : A few women around here I'm not acquainted with.
Judge : You in the back there. You interested?
Vin : Got some things that need takin' care of, but I guess they'll keep.
    Judge : Chris?
Chris : I've got a feeling I'm gonna regret this.
