Summary :
JD suffers a crisis of confidence when he accidentally shots and
kills a women when he attempts to stop a bank robbery. Ezra meets his match
in a gambler from St Louis. Vin has a secret revealed when he enters a poem
into a poetry contest the Clarion holds.
Memorable Scenes :
Scene One - in town
Two men under the guise of gold miners come into town and
enter the bank where they attempt to rob it. As they leave the bank, JD sees
what is happening and attempts to stop it He shoots and draws the attention
of the other guys. JD kills one of the robbers, trips and his shot goes thru
the bank window. Chris wounds the other in the butt. A women, Annie, is
carried out of the bank, she's been shot. JD is stunned when he realizes it
was his bullet that hit her.
Scene Two - The Hotel
Ezra plays a game of poker with Big Lester Banks, a gambler from St Louis who has just arrived in town. The game ends badly with each man having 3 kings. Ezra accuses Lester of cheating.
Scene Three - The Clarion
Mary and Vin talk about the poetry contest that the
Clarion is holding. Mary encourages Vin to submit a poem but Vin is
non-committal. Later Vin approaches Ezra and asks for his help in writing
the poem down. Vin explains his handwriting is bad. Ezra, in a drunken
state, just laughs at Vin and the fact he would write a poem.
Scene Four - The Town
Achilles and his gang come into town during the night and
steal a casket from the undertaker, thinking they have his brother's body,
but once back in camp, they discover it's Annie's body.
Scene Five - The Church
JD goes to see Josiah at the church tells him that he
doesn't know what to do since everything seems different now - the way his
guns feel. Josiah tells him a story about a SF boxer who quits because he
killed a man in a fight. The morale of the story is that sometimes a man
can't live with his own strength.
Scene Six - The Hotel
Ezra challenges Lester to another game of poker but this
time the game has a twist, all clothes are removed.
- Ezra : draw or stud poker?
- Lester : that will be apparent shortly
Scene Seven - The Clarion
Vin goes to see Mary and asked her help with the poem
- would she write it down for him since his writing is bad. Mary agrees
- Vin :I stare across
That solitary plain
Each and every dawn
Always searching for a hero's heart
A stranger bleeds as hope lays near death
Clutching a tangled wreath
To crown a hero's heart
Mary hands Vin the paper to confirm the poem is OK, Vin looks at it and says
yes but the paper is upside-down. Mary asks Vin if he can read? Vin gets
upset and storms out.
Scene Eight - Outside Town
JD visits Annie's grave and places his guns on the
cross
Scene Nine - The Street
Ezra is walking down the street clad in tablecloth
- Vin : Ezra? Lose your shirt?
Scene Ten - The Town
JD sells his horse to Yosemite. Buck sees this and
questions him and JD announces he has made the decision to go back east.
Scene Eleven - The Church
JD goes to say good-bye to Josiah. Josiah states he hopes JD will remember all the good he has done.
- JD : I ain't no hero
- Josiah : What do you think a hero is?
- JD : Someone who shots straight and true
- Josiah : That's a good shot is all. It takes someone who is willing to
sacrifice their life for the greater good and you've proved that time and time again John Dunne
Scene Twelve - The Clarion:
Vin goes to Mary to apologize about becoming angry. Vin says he has a new poem for Mary
- Vin : I am not the way they see me
Nor who they think I am
I'm just a man
And I have need for you, sweet woman
Not for the velvet of you touch
But the weaponry of your mind
There's a hole that needs some mending
My own Achilles' heel
So I offer up my need
Teach me, noble lady
Teach me to write and to read
Scene Thirteen - Outside Town
The stage is being fired upon by Achilles and his
gang. The driver is shot and JD climbs out and starts to turn the coach back
to town. As he is doing this, the rest of the seven arrive and a gun battle
begins. Achilles climbs on the coach and fights with JD. JD pushes him off
the coach and he is run over and dies. Another one of Achilles' gang tries
to get into the coach and Banks kicks at him. The robber grabs his leg and
it comes off! As the boys ride to meet up with JD, Ezra grabs the fake leg.
- Josiah : I'd say that was darn heroic
- JD : I'd say that was darn lucky, preacher
- Buck : That turn was perfect
- JD : Buck, you know nothing I do is perfect
- Chris : If he was perfect, he wouldn't be one of us
Buck gives JD his guns.
- Buck : But you are one of us. You shouldn't leave your guns out in the
rain.
Ezra gives Lester his prosthetic leg that is filled with money and cards. Ezra asked about Lester's leg and is told it was lost at Roulette. Ezra jokes about roulette having atrocious odds and they all ride towards home
